wind rough day out, unpadded section of a dock mixed with a little too much acceleration (tried to adjust for the very high winds) turned into minor impact damage on side of my boat. i have two gouges about 4 inches long and half inch wide, down to the fiberglass, not through it, but scraped it. what do i need to do to fix this? will just a gelcoat repair do the trick? any tips?

If its gouged to the roving you need to repair with a structure filler (something with fiber strand or glass bubbles). A gelcoat filler will likely brake away.

I repaired a similar gouge last year with marinetex, with some color mixed in.

It might. Without a good picture of the damage this is all conjecture.

Re: woops, crashed into dock

i spoke with a local repair shop and they use this gel coat paste to do alot of there repairs as well..they actually showed me a repair the were doing at the time with this stuff. much larger of a gouge than you show!
i scanned the label since the camera didnt want to focus on the print.

it says deep damage may require additional applications so im guessing its not just for small scratches or chips anyway.

done a little research and all responses say to thicken the filler or add small glass fibers for strength, but shouldnt have to since its not gone into the fiberglass.

this stuff is the consistancy of vaseline and shouldnt go anywhere, even if upside down.

instructions say to apply carefully and cover with wax paper to smooth out, sounds extremely easy! and pretty cheap too.

hopefully it warms up enough here so i can start using it :/

so did you purchase some of this stuff? where did ou get it? does it have color agents to mix? so do you not have to paint this repair? the gelcoat is just mixed to match color? my paint has a little flake in it i think. seems impossible.

i bought it from a local marina... but havnt used it yet.
the coloring agents are sold seperately. like 5 bucks for the tube.

no painting the repair, mix/match color as best as can/apply/cover with wax paper/smooth out/ let cure... hope i didnt miss anything....

yup i did....proper prep to the damage first!

same as if you were to reglass or paint.
wash it good removing wax. wipe down with acetone or whatever.
lightly sand/scuff damaged area.
clean again.
then apply the repair.

you know, actually, why not just use some fiberglass and resin, sand it, then paint? is there an advantage to just using gelcoat?
