Working In New Orleans?

Hello folks,
I have a job offer that would involve living in or around the New Orleans area and participating in the rebuilding.
This is a 9 hour drive from my home in Florida so it's safe to say I'd be living there for weeks possibly months at a time.
Is anyone familiar with the current living conditions around New Orleans?
I would imagine the basics, food, fuel, laundry facilities are available, how about crime rate, cost of living etc.? Any insight or advice is very appreciated. Thanks in advance.

i have several friends, that are in the construction business. they go where the work is. most have travel trailers. my cousin has a large 5th wheel, that he and his son share. then come home every 3 -4 weeks. they say it sure beats a motel, or rooming house.

Interesting to know what you come up with here BobSim, I am a Florida Certified Contractor myself, and I have been considering doing some work in N.O. I have a neighbor whose brother is a developer in the area; I am supposed to meet with him over the Thanksgiving holiday to discuss the possibilities.

TD the travel trailer sounds like a fine idea. I used to have a coatings business that put me in several locations around FL; I had to sleep in my cargo trailer a couple of nights when I was doing some work at the VA Hosp. in West Palm; a major storm had just gone through and every hotel room was booked. I "showered" one night behind some shrubbery using a garden hose; only so much polymer coating the body can handle!!!
