Worried about freezing

Hey guys,

I am going to try to ask this the right way. If I want to unwinterize my boat to go Striper fishing, can I let the motor run for a few seconds after flushing to make sure I get the water out, or will this ruin my impellor? I am concerned about getting a 20 degree night here or there. It is a 2003 90 Hp Merc.

I would not recomend to run at all without any water. It should drain ok by itself. The main worry with freezing is when you get water in the lower unit. That can be bad news. Tim

its good practice to trim the motor down as far as you can after you get out of the water. Let it all drain out before raising it back up for your transom saver. It only takes a few seconds for a dry impeller to die.

store you motor in the operating position, foot down. they are self draining when down. changing the lower unit oil in the fall is good, it gives you opportunity, to find water in the lower unit before a freeze, and a cracked foot. do not run motor with out water.
