ok we say today is the day the boat goins in the water, Did all our check list life jackets, rope, drain plug ect, It's starts it drizzle while on the way to the ramp but the wife says we are doing it, besides we had a full canvan inclosure, not sure if she was saying that because she knew I really wanted to or not, but we get down to the ramp and try to back in, Must of pulled forward about 6 times, luckly is wasn't the best day and their was no one else their.

We back her up and I say oh almost forgot the drain plug, Thinking haha I didn't forget it like some of the stories I read, so I go to pop it in only to find out it doesn't fit, I try and try but nothing, Then I remember a had a brass plug in the boat and it looks about that size, Sure enough screws right in, I'm thinking YES things are looking good, Just then the EP pulls up drives right down the boat ramp along side us and says you going out or coming in. I say going out, then he goes into do you have life jackets, I say sure do, I pop in the boat and show him the jackets, show him the whistle, flares, fire extinguisher, show him the registeration, and he says ok your good to go have fun, He was really nice through the whle thing So my son (7) pops in the boat we back it up a litte more and push it off, I walk it down then jump off the tire cover on to the boat and I'm in,

It's floating backwards and I go to start it. Nothing, umm ok I try again nothing still floating backwards and to the north side which the sign on the ramp says no boating on the north side because it too shallow, I start getting worried so I throw the anchor over so I don't keep floating over their I try again and the motor starts.Thank god I think, I kick it into forward and go around the dock that's shaped like a T it's about 15' off the water about 200' into the water and the t part is about 80' across , Now instead of going on the side closest to the ramp remember I went around the T, I get my dad and my wife in the boat and the motor dies, I go to start it and nothing again, try try try and nothing, now the waves are pushing us into the beams that support the dock, SO my wife and my dad use the oars to push us off the posts, but the waves keep smashing us into them, I try the blower it works the horn works , but the engine does turn It does nothing no clicks no noise just dead! finally I say the heck with it, and stand on the windsheild and climb up a post to the top deck, They had corss beam which made climbing easy,

Once I get up their they throw me a rope and a start pulling the boat the along side the dock, but once I got to the adjsent part on the dock, things became tricks, I didn't have enough leverage to make it around the side, Finally after a lot of work from them down below, We made it around, now all I had to do was make it around 2 other side, Oh and by the way their is about 10 people fishing that had to pull up their lines so I could pull the boat along, So once we get close to the boat ramp I run and get the tralier back it in and hook up the cable, everyone gets off the boat and my wife and I are in the water up to our chest trying to push the boat on the trailer, She is in jeans and sneakers, me in jean shorts and sandles my dad cranks it in, I thought for sure the cable was going to snap but it didn't, The whole process from when the motor died to we got it on the trailer had to been an hour and a half,

We strap it down and try the motor, again nothing the tilt work as we raised it before trailing it. so off we go to where we keep it, I get it parked and start putting up the canvan top as we took it down before we made our trip to the ramp. after everything is all set, I look over in discust at the instrument panel, and I notice the throtle is pushed abit in the forward posistion not much just a little, so I go over and place it in netural and turn the key, THE ENGINE STARTED!!!!, I didn't run it long as soon as it turned I shut it off, I then put the throtle in the same posistion it was and nothing, Turned the key a few times and nothing, I moved to back and it turned over, I couldn't believe it, My dad is saying it must be the starter, but I haven't told him about the throtle yet, I told my wife once we started heading home that I thought I had it in gear and maybe that's why it didn't start, I'm not sure but I thinik I'm sleeping on the couch tonight,

Oh and the iceing on the cake, while I first started the boat while I was floating backwards and to the north, I dinged up the prop, Not too bad my dad is insistant that he can fix it. Just a few tears from hitting the rocks
So overall our very first time out was an experiance we will never forget, I'm jsut hoping it someone on shore had a video camera and send it in to americas funniest home video we get a cut.

Well, the bright side is you got the first problems out of the way. First ding to the prop. The first time for any of that is the worst. It's all downhill now...next problems won't seem nearly as bad. Plus you learned a bunch. When you can learn these lessons without any serious problems, be thankful. A lot of lessons are harder learned.

Sorry for your troubles, but this is a prime reason for starting the boat on the muffs before leaving your house. Odds are, if it runs at home, it should run at the dock. Sounds like you may have a misadjusted or failing neutral safety switch. Next time WILL be better:D

Re: worst first time out long but WOW!!!!

If it makes you any better, my July 5th first time out didn't too much better.

Our day started w/ me finishing up the things we needed. We went and got a battery, put the registration on the boat, put the spare tire on the trailer, etc. I didn't start the boat on the muffs because it had been started 2 days before at the marina. I was there when they ran it and it ran great.
We drive the 7 miles to the ramp and get things ready. Plug out, straps off, etc. My fiance makes a comment about how I take everything too serious, so now I'm just ready to get on the dang water. Back down the ramp, I hop in the boat, and she cranks. And cranks. And cranks. Won't even try to turn over. Well, my dad gave me the boat a few weeks ago, but had only had the boat on the water a couple times in the last 7 years, so I call him up to see if he has any advice. We can't figure it out and a few more people show up at the ramp, so I pull back up to the top of the hill and we continue to try to figure it out. One guy comes over and says that he just had problems w/ his safety lanyard/kill switch, so he looks at mine, we try it a few times, and he doesn't have any more ideas. After another 15 minutes of trying things, I'm about to head home. A guy pulls up to finish packing his boat up and I realize he has a similar engine. I walk over to see if he has any advice. He comes over and starts looking at things. The first thing he does is pump the primer bulb and he says, "you're leaking gas." I remember my fiance making a comment about it while I was on the phone w/ my dad, but she was pumping the bulb after it already had pressure in it. I figured it was an "over flow" of some sort to keep you from flooding the engine out. The gentleman looks at things for a minute, messes w/ the fuel line clip, and "snap" we hear it fully engage. I walk up and give it a try and it fires immediately. The dang fuel line wasn't fully clipped in, so it was sucking air.
I tell him thanks, how much we appreciate it, and we're off to the ramp again. This time the boat fires, I back it off the trailer and my fiance parks the truck. The boat dies a couple times, but it's still cold, so no big deal. We go out and run around for a bit and then settle in for a little fishing. We see some clouds rolling in, so I pull out my phone and check the radar. There is a storm coming, and it is serious, but it is really little. No big deal, this lake is pretty big, we might be able to run to the north side (by the ramp we used) and miss it. If not, we'll be close to the ramp to get out of dodge. After maybe 90 minutes on the water it starts to sprinkle and we decide we need to head out. I drop my fiance off at the dock and she takes off to get the truck. It is starting to rain now, and as I tie the bow to the dock I see some fool in a pontoon slam straight on into the dock. In my delay from watching him the stern of the boat floats away from the dock and now I can't reach to get it tied up. Instead of grabbing a long rope, tying it to the stern and then getting off the boat and pulling it too the dock, I untied the front and went to start the boat. I figured I would drift out just a bit and then just drive onto the trailer when she got it back in. Well, like I mentioned before the engine wouldn't idle very well, so running at a slow pace as about impossible. I couldn't get the dang thing to stay running, kept dying and drifting close to shore, and it is now POURING DOWN RAIN. My fiance gets the truck backed in and comes down to the dock. By now I've finally gotten the boat back to the dock. We grab the boat and push it onto the trailer. It goes on fine, but the stern is crooked as heck on the trailer. Thankfully we only have 7 miles to drive home.
Last night I also realized that I had forgotten to take the drain plug out, so I pulled it and climbed in the boat to check things out. When I opened the bottom storage hatch I had water up to the DECK. Man I hope this boat dries out and our trips get easier!!!

Seems that what gets us the most is when we haven't developed our boating habits yet. Owning and operating a boat should be taken in the same light as owning and operating an aircraft. Get your checklists memorized and go through them into the water and out. Once that's established, you can avoid posting in this particular forum with stories of your own, and instead post on stories of others being where you are now. ;)

I accidently pulled the clip off the engine kill switch. Freaking out, 15 miles away from anything. I did have some paddles. I figured it out after about 10 minutes of freaking.

That's why your very first trip out on your first boat should be with an experience boater. I know it's extremely hard to do but the wife, kids and parents should stay home the first time. Especially if none of them know what they're doing. If you got a big heavy fiberglass boat, don't float it off the trailer unless you know for sure that it will start. Otherwise, you will spend an hour and a half in chest deep water trying to get it back on the trailer.
