I stopped and inspected a 1997 24'Gradywhite this weekend. Looked clean and structurely sound but on the price sticker ($19.5k)a note that the twin Johnny 150 Sea Pros had just been recently rebuilt. My quetion, can you put that many hours on '97 motors to have them rebulit in just 7 years? I do not suspect that this charter boat. I have not been able to talk to the owner but not sure if this boat is worth a second look. What is the "Boards" consenses of this "deal"?

Knut,

I suppose one could put that many hours on, but I doubt it.

Outboards die from neglect, not from wearing out. It doesn't take much neglect to kill a $10K+ engine. If they're rebuilt and in good shape, I'd go for it.

Do the following:

1. Check compression on all cylinders. Should be within 10 psi of each other.

2. Look at lower unit lune. Clean=OK.

I suspect that it makes a big difference whether those engines are carbed or FICHT. My SIL's '97 Johnny 150 FICHT didn't make it to 100 hours. The carbed 150 he replaced it with has about 700 hours on it and no sign of needing help.

DJ gives good advice.
