I looked at a 17' boat trailer along with a 14' aluminum boat the other day. Guy was asking 450$ for the pair. Trailer has no paperwork nor does the boat but with a notarized bill of sale I'm not worried. Boat had a leak patched with caulk or goop or something along those lines. Trailer has decent tires some rust needs a light. I offered him $300 for the pair and he just got back to me saying for $325 its mine. Im only buying these to flip and not for personal use. thats the ad http://southjersey.craigslist.org/boa/2652881213.html

Thet thang is butt-ugly, NYG. I wouldn't give him more than $50 for the whole package.

You should be. Done this before? The only time you should take that is if you are going to use both ONLY on private property--you can't sell them.

Re: Worth it?

I've sold boats and trailers before with no paperwork before. I've gotten a rowboat titled before that had no paperwork and the same with a trailer as long as i had a notarized bil of sale

Re: Worth it?

now that I've looked at it, after you spend a few hours and maybe $100 to fix it up, you can sell that whole rig for about $250. If you get titles.

Re: Worth it?

i would've thought the trailer would be worth 250 alone. I've sold a couple of 10' jon boats for $200 here with no paperwork. sold an 11'6 sears boat no paperwork for $250. i thought i could fetch $300 for the boat

Oh wow, I'm not sure if i can get that much here but I'm fairly confident with some elbow grease and some good pictures i can make it look good. Ive had to deal with lack of paperwork a few times before so I'm not worried

Re: Worth it?

doesn't sound like you need any advice then. Those of us responding can only speak of our own markets. Yours is quite different.

Surface rust! HA-HA-HA! Did you look at the front of that trailer? Anyway, I'm going to offer him 350 because I am just as crazy as you. LOL

Good luck with it.

When that boat was built they probably didn't title boats. So there won't be one.Bill of sale is all you should need.
They didn't title boats in this state until the 80s?Then it was optional if you wanted to get it titled. After a certian date then all boats had to be titled, new or when they were sold.

Sorry, I know I am not stateside, but if I saw that in the UK, I would recommend a box of matches and a gallon of petrol..... just a shame it is all metal and wont burn.

Every state has different rules, requirements and proceedures in this regard, so it doesn't do much good to compare them. Just showing up with a new bill of sale on an old boat doesn't always work. To make it worse, each clerk at the desk makes up different rules, too. One gave me fits b/c my bill of sale didn't have all the info about the trailer, but I had the signed over title, which by law is all you need. Apparently, not so on Tuesday afternoons.

I'd look at that rust more carefully...

that frame could be f'd.

I'd have lowballed him a bit and started at 200... I wouldn't pay 3 for that combo.

I'm in yer neck of the woods and paid 150 for a trailer that I cleaned up and flipped for 400...

Just make sure you know what you're getting into with no paperwork. In NY, you would have to register the trailer as homemade. That will involve getting it weighed, then police inspection (they run it's description to see if it's stolen), then safety inspection. After weighing it, you have to schedule the next two inspections and it generally takes a couple months.

On the boat, it's much more difficult.

That said, check the weight, you might make some money scrapping it.
