worth saving?

I need a little help. I just bought a 1989 Bayliner Capri, and have no experience with boats.

I took the cover off the motor, which is a Force 125 (1989, I assume) and the cylinder head is off, and the #3 piston is siezed. It looks like the guy took a hammer and chisel to the sleeve, so that cylinder obviously needs to be re-sleeved.

The other pistons are not seized. Is this engine worth saving? Can I save it? Can you give me a rough estimate of repair costs?

Please, help out a new enthusiast!!!

wilkin,

Resleeving/reboring is going to cost you at least $3-400.00 per cylinder. I would not put that kind of money into a Force.

If it has a good lower unit/trim-tilt assembly, you can part it out and sell those items on e-bay. You'll probably get a few hundred $$$ for them.

Re: worth saving?

I'm a novice when it comes to outboards. I'm fairly mechanical though, having a plumbing and heating license. Unless your a mechanic of some type or just enjoy a good learning challenge, I'd pass on putting any dollars into that motor.

Re: worth saving?

Hello,

The motor might be savable. The first thing would be to disassemble the powerhead. If the crank is fine and the only scored cylinder is the one with the stuck piston it will be fixable. If the crank is trashed and the block is trashed i would look for another motor. Not to be mean but forces are not a good motor. Ide say if you took it in for a rebuild you would be looking at 1000-1500. I dont think its worth it. Buy a OMC better quality and longativiy. any questions feel free to e mail me thanks

Again, I don't have experience with boats. Is Force a low-end name?

I'm not certain I can afford to replace the engine. Even if the repair costs $800, that may be a little more up my alley.

Re: worth saving?

Is there a manual I can get to start tearing it apart? I'm pretty handy with a wrench, I rebuild ATV motors all the time. I'm thinking I'll save final judgement based on what I see of the crank and other problems. Plus, a re-sleeve should be alot cheaper if it's JUST a re-sleeve, without the disassembly and re-assembly costs.

Am I thinking on the right path, or should I just replace my engine and use this Force as an anchor?

Hi, Wilkin.

Yes, the Force is a low, low end engine. By the time you have it in good shape you may have spent a couple of grand.

I would sell it for parts and replace it with a more modern engine that has good parts and service availability.

Good luck. :)

Re: worth saving?

How about a Johnson 200HP? I have a pretty good line on one. Would this be a wise investment?
