Hello all just wondering if anyone could tell me the wot rpm's on a 1974v4 85hp johnson? The tag on the motor says 85hp@5000 rpm's was just wondering if this was wot or if it was 5500 like other outboards I have owned.

5500 or higher. Actually, 5800 is probably what you should target.

5000 RPM is the RPM at which the motor was rated at 85HP.

In the factory manuals the specifications will say "Horsepower (B.I.A. -certified.........85 hp at 5000 rpm" and, "Full throttle operating range...........4500 to 5500 RPM"

As iwombat said, you will want to prop the motor to peak at 5800 RPM at WOT.

Thank's for all the reply, but was just wondering if anyone knew if it has 85hp @5000 then what would be the actual @5500-58000, and what would be a safe wot rpm for this motor I mean if I run it in the high range is it more likely to blow something or is that just the redline so to speak????

sorry but one more thing I think the motor may be too low in the water! How far should the anti cavitation plate be below the bottom of boat? It is currently on a 15 yankee tri-hull about two inches bellow bottom of boat.

Should be 1"-2" above the keel. Just to start you out - keep raising it on the transom until it starts to cavitate in the corners, then go down a notch.
