Hi from Denmark

We have a small boating forum in Denmark, and we have been discussing this film:

We dont know what the guy is doing to make the boat "sink" but have discussed what would actualy happen on a outdrive if you went from WOT foreward directly to WOT reverse (we know the mastercraft havent got a outdrive but anyway)

My guess is that on a:

-Alpha drive the FloTorq would be destroyed - and the Dog Clutch would probably break

-On a Bravo/Volvo SX the cone clutch would probably seize

Has anyone tried it and know what actualy happens?

I think the coupler would spin before the dog or gears give.

That boat is an inboard with propshaft and propeller. They were part of a watersports show and were trying to do a power turn or other specialized maneuver and as I understand it they hit a trough leftover from themselves or other boats maneuvers. You can see some ripples across the scene behind them a ways and I think they ran into something similar right when he started the maneuver.

I am no expert, but throttle, trim tabs and rudder input are usually all their maneuvers require.

Then again I may be all wet like them, and he was inventing a new but very expensive trick!

In any event if the maneuver requires a WOT shift from Forward to Reverse that it is very hard on any kind of transmission I would think.

Ayuh,...

I believe that's a Jetboat....

With nothing but a reverse bucket to divert the flow,... That's a pretty easy maneuver....

I honestly don't think that Can be done with an outdrive powered boat....
You'd never get it Out of forward, muchless into reverse....

guess in the video i thought it was an inboard...? whatever it is and however they accomplish that, i don't know...... why would you want to sink a perfectly good speedboat.... someones got to much money to burn........

if ya just gotta sub something, get a jetski....

def. a mastercraft, direct drive too. i think he was trying to do a power turn where you spin a 180. a direct drive inboard with tracking fins can do that. i've seen video's of skiers going around the front of the boat when timed well...

a smaller, direct drive can turn it even tighter.

looks like the guy in the original video buried the bow right before the spin.

My brother has a Ski (Nautique/Supreme/etc-ique) and it has a Velvet-Drive that shifts pretty fast from F to R. He doesn't do it quite like that video but it appears that one may be able to do it (I wouldn't)

It's amazing what some people will do with a boat if they drink enough beer!!

Keeps the pros in repair work!! and if it's severe enough it keeps some of the idiots off the water for a while...

Yup, definitly nothing sterndrive about that boat.... You can even see the engine cover clearly in the center of the boat, not the rear.

I can think of NO better way to blow your transmission!! Direct drives don't like being shifted at speed.

We had a 39 16 ft Chris craft single cockpit it popped out of forward into neutral at about 3/4 throttle ,25 mph. Took a nose dive like that but with small cockpit water went clear over but cracked the glass.I wonder if he may have accidently knocked it into neutral.Also if there is a kill lanyard I think the reaction would be the same.

That video surfaced here a couple months ago.

A couple decades ago when I was doing the Navy thing, I had the pleasure of going on sea trails on T-AGS 39, a 499'10" boat. One of the maneuvers was to go full throttle ahead and throw her into to reverse full throttle. On a boat this size, it's less than instantaneous. It took a couple minutes to stop the screws (which were 20 some feet in diameter) and reverse them. There were four dumpsters chained to the deck of the fantail. They were dancing around like ragdolls. I never knew there were bolts in dumpsters. Quite a few bolts were found afterwards on the deck too. A wall of water shot up four levels above the main deck, the only dry spot was the bow. The boat was not a happy camper, you could feel the vibrations all through the boat.
It was an awesome experience.

I have seen jetskis submarine, but not a bowrider version of anything. Seems to me the bow needs to be closed for that sub trick to have a chance. The boat in the first video is a Master Craft. I am not sure what model or if it has a jet drive or not or even if MC offers a jet drive in that model. I am pretty sure the boat is part of a show and does not belong to the driver.

ever slapped a car into reverse while going forward? i've been in a car where someone did that...the engine died. car ran fine when it was re-started.

i can see where damage would be a possibility putting it in reversbut there's no way it would make the nose dive like that. IF the boat stayed running, the prop would slip in the very least. its not going to jerk a couple thousand pound boat around like that. if that was possible, there would have to be some sort of safety feature to prevent it because if there had been people in the bow, they could have easily been washed overboard.

i still think they buried the nose into some rollers at the same time they were preparing to power turn it.

the passenger braces herself right as they come to the rollers, they had something planned but i don't think they expected that.

there is a lot of other related vids on that subject.....including one on flat calm,,,,,,it seems the easyest way to do it tho, is stuff the nose in a wake.

your point on prob cav is right on.

ive sub'd my ray once or twice...(not intentionally)....glad its bouyant !!!!! the nose popped right back up and soaked us all......we laughed....but most of us lost our cell phones and our electric car openers/starters.....i wrote about it in sht
