I have a 72 Merc 9.8 model 110. Got it running good finally, all except one thing. When I am WOT in a hard turn it will begin to lug down like i expect because its having to change directions, but then all the sudden it will kill. Just like you hit the kill switch. I have checked everything I can think of as far as electrical connections and bad wires. I cant imagine that it would be the carb, but I could be worng. Any suggestions on what to look for next? Thanks,

D

Re: WOT in a hard turn!

Once it dies like that have you tried pumping the primer bulb? Was it soft and took a couple of squeezes to firm up again?

If so, you may have an air leak into the fuel line at the fitting to the motor, when the line is pulled by the motor turning, air leaks in and the motor simply runs out of fuel.

Replace the fitting and ensure that there is enough slack in the hose to allow room for the motor to turn without pulling much at all against the fitting.

Great idea Charlie. Or it could be a low fuel level in the carb bowl (varnish or float manadjusted) and a hard turn would force fuel to the side causing the venturi tube to come out of the fuel and cause your lack of fuel shutdown.

Re: WOT in a hard turn!

I checked the primer bulb and it only took about a half a squeeze to before the needle seated. Can I adjust the float in the carb? When I went through the carb it seemed like the float wasnt adjustable with those two little arms that are under the needle. I am thinking about replacing the bulb anyway because it never really gets hard like solid hard, like some Ive had. Ill look into the fuel though. Makes sense. Thanks,

Couldn't be the tilt switch on the engine?

tilt switch? never heard of that?

I believe he is refering to the mercury switch. The one that will not let the engine turn over if it is the fully raised position.

Im pretty sure it doesnt have that switch, it will start in raised or lowered position. The serial number is 3451923 though. Is there any chance it could be that when it comes under load an ignition componite is shorting or not working?

Re: WOT in a hard turn!

There is no mercury switch.

Maybe the spark plug wires or boots are shorting out in the turn for some strange reason, flexing or whatever.

It must be the Awesome G-Forces developed by the mighty 9.8!! ;)

Try running the motor with the cover off and see what happens. You might notice something that you wouldn't otherwise.

HTH, let us know what you find.........ed

I dont know about awesome G forces but when my son (4) sticks his arm over the side of my little boat to touch the water and I turn hard to dunk his hand, he gives me a look like I just put his favorite toy in the garbage disposal and turned it on. Priceless.:D

Cute! My Best-est Boating Buddy and I raised our kids in a boating environment, it's good clean fun and builds a lasting bond. Gotta luv it!!!
