What is the WOT rating of the 888 (302)? I have been concerned that mine will only turn 4000. Others have told me she should spin 4500. I just finished a complete overhaul and have 12 hours on the engine (first few were careful break-in). I don't know what she would originally turn since she was locked when bought. I have a 21p MI wheel alum and a Hustler 19p alum and they turn near identical R's. The motor was not rebuilt totally stock and has a few upgrades like better pistons, molly rings, hi-cap oil pump, etc. At 4000, she doesn't sound like she is working that hard.

Re: WOT on an 888

That sounds low to me.

I have a 17 pitch on my boat (23' century with 350 merc and Alpha) and I'm thinking of going to a 19. It came with the 17 on it and my WOT is 5000 which is obviously too high

I can SNATCH a skier out with it though. The boat doesn't know anybody is back there. :D

I think you're over propped. Do you have access to a 17p prop just to see?

Also, can you confirm that when you shove the throttle lever all the way forward that the cam on the carbuerator opens all the way? Are you absolutely positive that you're at WOT? Possible you didn't adjust your linkages right when overhauling???

Re: WOT on an 888

Had a 17' Larson with a 302's and then changed to a 351w. The stock 302 with 17 pitch prop was at 4400 and about 40 mph, with the 351 built a little,19P prop moved up to 46mph at 4400 rpm and with great take off. Could have moved up to a 21P and gained about 5 mph top end but I would have lost my hole shot. You dont want to turn those Fords to much faster for long. Peices tend to fly out of them. I am a hot rodder (boats). Went through 3 302's in two years. To many rpm's. The 351 with a longer stroke held up for 2 years before I sold it.

Re: WOT on an 888

Thanks for the responses. Low end grunt is not a problem. I have no problems with pulling skiers. I don't think I'm much over propped since both props turn almost identical R's. I think I have a tuning issue. She purrs like a kitten, but I have serious doubts about the ignition. I installed new points/condenser when she was rebuilt last month, but I believe the coil is original 1976 issue as were the wires before they were replaced last week. I'm probably going to order up a Pertronix Ignitor 2 and Flamethrower 2 35-40k volt coil next week. That should work ok with my 8mm Magnecor wires. Other than that, I know she picks up 200-300 R's if the engine cover is open. Also think the carb is sue for a rebuild. (yeah, I know, should have rebuilt the carb when the engine was done). Any experience here with the Ignitor II?

jason, the rated wot rpm for the 888 is 3800 to 4200 . ford motors do have a lower rated wot rpm than the chevys
