hey guys i have a 99' 1950 bayliner capri with a 3.0l merc in it. I have had this problem for some time now and i cann't figure it out. Here is the back story though. I pulled the engine last summer because i thought i had a busted exhaust tube witch ened up only being loose. So i put the motor back in and every thing ran fine a couple of times out on the water.
Then one night after a day out on the water i was bringing the boat home and i must not have raised the prop all the way and it hit on the ground pretty hard. I checked every thing out and it all looked good. Took the boat out a week later and it was running good, but all of a sudden the rpms droped and it didn't sound quite right. Then it went away and was running fine. The boat did this on a couple of outings and finally the rpms would not jump back up at wot. The rpm's just hang out around 3300. I have found this list on another post and i will go throught what i have done. I just have a feeling it's something easy i just don't know what it is.
1. Fuel condition. Type and Octane possibly old fuel
put in new fuel non-ethonol
2. Propeller pitch or diameter, damaged blades
blades are fine 15 x 17p
3. Restricted fuel pickup tube or anti siphon valve Fuel System Test
not sure about how to test this
4. Crankcase oil volume, high oil level can cause aerated oil and lifter collapse
oil lvl is fine
5. Marine growth on hull and outdrive
nope hull is clean
6. Wrong gear ratio in outdrive
alpah 1 don't know the ration but it should be fine since it ran good before and the outdrive has never been messed with
7. Restricted carburetor air intake (clogged flame arrestor)
is the flame arrestor the steel air filter on top?
8. Restricted exhaust system (broken exhaust shutters/flappers) in engine transom shield or drive
Checked this out and the flappers seemed stuck but it didn't change a thing the next time i went out.
9. Poor cylinder compression Compression Test
Don't think this would be it because it would jump back and forth when it first started.
10. Carburetor defective, or wrong type.
Not sure if it's defective or maybe i hooked something up wrong when i put the engine back in.
11. Fuel pump pressure and vacuum
Was fine before but not sure how to check
12. Boat overloaded, improperly loaded, or improperly trimmed.
nope checked with just me in the boat
13. Engine Overheating
engine stays nice and cool
14. Engine timing and ignition system operation
not sure but it sounds good no skiping or jumping
15. Remote control cables and linkage for proper travel to open throttle plates fully.
Maybe, if i hooked up the cable wrong when i put the motor back in. not sure how to check.
