I was out with my "new to me" 1992 60 hp Mercury - it powers a 16 1/2 foot single console aluminum.
At WOT and properly trimmed the best I could do was 4400 rpm (28 mph). Based on Mercury's spec's it should be in the 5000-5500 range.
The motor seems to be running well - it starts well and idles very quietly and smoothly, shifts fine. Acceleration is even with no hesitation. The plugs are new. I am using fresh 92 octane, ethanol-free fuel.
The prop is the original dealer-installed Black Max 13" pitch. I could drop 2 or 3" inches down a 10 - 11 pitch to bring u the rpm's.
But before I start swapping props I would think the first thing to check is the throttle cable. Now since it is idling/shifting properly I would imagine it is fine at the closing posiion. My guess, assuming there is a problem, is a lack of cable travel sufficient to ope the carbs enough to get it up to proper WOT spec's.
How would I do this?
Thanks!
