Would this cause boat to take on water?

Edited to request you start down at 7th post with the 2 images. You could read this original too I guess. ;)

1989 3.0 liter with stern drive. I took on water at lake and when I got it home I saw the bellows was ripped. So replaced bellows. Took back out to lake put it in at dock, hopped in boat and opened engine cover only to see it taking on water at a pretty high rate. Yes drain plug was in. So remove stern drive and look and see that the gasket was ripped at the bottom. I did a look around with bright flashlight and all bellows looked in place and attached. Would this rip cause it to take on water? And even if yes, it seemed like a pretty high rate of flow for water coming in that little spot. Thoughts?

Has to be something else. That o-ring really only stops water if there is anther place leaking.

I would run motor on muffs and see if any water coming in. If not, then back in and leave on trailer. Look for where water is coming in. Use a camera on a phone to video where you can't get an eyeball.

if you jump up and down on the lower unit of the outdrive, does the transom shield move with respect of the transom?

Rick it was taking on the water while sitting in water prior to starting engine. Due to this, I'm guessing running on muffs would not be relevant?

Scott, well no, didn't try that, rather sounded like something I would NOT want to do lol. Transom shield would be the plate inside the boat that the gimbal housing bolts to?

If you have a hole in your exhaust Y pipe it will take on water when running on muffs. A hole there will also take on water when in the wet. Running on muffs tells you a number of things and is easy.

No Title

So filled inside of boat up to level shown in first photo. Just barely past the bottom of the exhaust as indicated by the red line. Looked out boat and saw water coming out both sides at the ports shown. I'm hoping this means something specific to somebody.

y pipe leaking at the connection to the transom housing or the pipe is cracked ...

Yeah, so the exhaust is loose and the the top two bolts missing. Good news is the engine is easy to get ready for removal. Now just to consider how I want to remove it...hmmm

Still usually referred to as a Y pipe. But yeah, it ain't a Y in an inline.

Don't think you'll be very successful trying this with the engine in. You don't have to pull the engine all the way, you can lift the engine and move it forward a couple feet or the boat back a couple feet while you work on the transom.
