would this work for larger outboard test tank?

Tired of running to the lake for testing our 140's and dads 225 outboards. Looking to set up a test tank at home and came across these for $60. They are 48" L x 40" W x 45" H and hold 275 gallons. I have heard about problems with turbulence and starving the water pump using larger outboard with smaller test tanks. If you you guys think this tank will work, should baffles be added to help the turbulence situation? Thanks for the help and opinions.

lil-beaver, I can see that work very well unless you have plans to run the engine at WOT. Normally test tanks at home are for verifying the engine cranks and runs. But running the prop for any period of time will certainly cause water issues. So if you use it to verify cranking and water pump working and things like that, I think that will work perfectly... JMHO!

Do you plan testing both engines while they are assume on their respective boat, or plan removing them for home testing ?

In a perfect world, I would like to be able to test the motors transom mounted still. If I can't do that, then I would have to put them on the test tank somehow or on my outboard stand.

I was thinking of using a test tank for testing, setting timing, etc. If I'm going to end up just being able to use it to test tank for basics and not being able to run up the rpm's for a short time, I will just use the muffs. There are so many problems that won't show their ugly head on muffs and running down to the lake is a pain when you are trying to diagnose problems. Would be great to run under a little load to diagnose and test at home. Now where to get test props for older omc motors.

You can only test engines at wot on a proper large container, but will need that special test props which doesn't have blades. So no issue overrflowing container at high rpm. Don't know if testing an engine at high rpm with that special prop is same as testing combo on water at load while engine is pushing a boat ? Someone should know..

Using the special test wheel is the same as having the boat on the water. That's why OMC built them. I've used them a lot and you don't have to worry about falling out of the boat to trouble shoot a WOT problem.

Not only OMC has them, all mayor OB brand manufacturer recommend using their own to test their engines while being tested on test tanks. Can you go full throttle with those without an issue ?

saw that set up on Craiglist the the other day. He had the motor still on the boat, and he had to cut down one sides height.

You can make your own test wheel out of an old prop. Get a big compass and mark off the ends a little bit at a time and cut them off. Then try it. When you reach the rpm you want, leave it there. It brings no forward pressure on the boat but the rpm comes up. I've made some for Yamahas already.
