Trying to help my buddy with his motor but we have a dead tach. Motor is a 1986 Johnson GT 150. Pretty sure there is no feed from voltage regulator. Motor runs fine, all cyls working good. We hooked up a old dwell/tach gague on the grey lead on terminal block on his motor, with the black going to ground and we had nothing on tach. I did the same thing on my 1994 Rude 120 hp tonight to make sure that this would work and it worked on my boat,,spiked gague,,not set up for 2 stroke I guess. So i think that the problem has to be in volt reg. Here is my question,,,could we sneak a wire under a spark plug cap and use it for the pulse to the tach,,or could this be setting us up for complete and utter failure. How does the pulse work out of the voltage regulator. Any other ides also considered.

If you want to convert your tach to a firecracker, proceed with using the spark lead!!
If an outboard tack, you need to use the AC from the stator THROUGH the rectifier/regulator or the voltage will be too high and you will not be able to calibrate it correctly.
