I'm pulling the top end off looking to stop a very small water leak into the engine oil on my 2001 4.3L. It's fresh water only with no over heating issues. Good compression, runs fine. I was going to do it complete in one day but, I was wondering if I should have the heads serviced or cleaned or checked. Any 4.3 folks have advice ? Thanks, Cliff

+2 its not that expensive to do. I would rather take it apart once and have the heads inspected and serviced rather then to just put them back on.

Yep, concur with above. I'd go through them for leaks, flatness, guide check, valve job, new valve seals, and check spring pressures.

Here's a handy tip to make the job easier. Take an old shallow box and poke 12 holes in the top. As the pushrods get removed, place them in the holes and label them by cyl and I/E. The ball end that faces the lifter goes downward. Valvetrain components wear together and mixing them up can cause them to prematurely fail. This way they all get installed back in the same spot. :)

Use a flat pan for the rockers and label them too.
