From reading back a posts it sounds like the shifter and LU are not in agreement. The manuals always say to put the shifter in Forward gear and turn the shaft at the LU to match. It really doesn't matter, Frwd. or Rev. as long as the LU and shifter agree. Drop the LU just enough to rotate the shift shaft with pliers and try again.
