The motor ran fine about 2 weeks ago. 2 days ago I had a hard time keeping it running, checked the gas and it looked like coffee add 2 creamers. So I ditched all the gas and started fresh with some sea foam in it with a 50:1 oil mix. After that it would star and run but idle pretty high I would say around 3k - 4k maybe more. It would idle fine if I pushed back the timing plate with my thumb (Keeping a close eye on the flywheel as to not lose a finger.) But I couldn't quite understand how this problem would just arrive from a 2 week sit with dry carbs. So while I was looking around. The motor stopped pumping water right in front of my eyes, as to say... "screw you" So I changed the water pump... then went back to the original high idle problem. Like I said I was hesitant to adjust anything but I found if I would idle up the throttle it would stick at the higher RPM until I reached back and physically reset the throttle by hand.
Onto the best part... about 15 mins ago... maybe 30. I was running the motor in a drum and decided to see how the RPM's would react with a little back pressure. I started the motor, popped it in gear, and in return the foot smashed a gear into 5 pieces and blew a hole in my foot about the size of a 50 cent piece. It was not idling high when I put it in gear. I know that shifting at high RPM's can do exactly what I am describing but you are just going to have to trust me on this one... So when its all said in done, in 2 hellish days I went from owning a nice fishing rig to having absolutely nothing.
While I search for a new lower unit I would like to take the time to fix the idle issue. I'm not going to lie, it does not even seem worth it at this point. But the motor has treated me well for years... If I could cry I would. I can see my craigslist ad now... Johnson Outboard, idles a little high, leaks a little oil from the foot. lol.
And I'm new here, frustrated, depressed and lost. So take it easy on me.
