that boat may not handle a 70 hp. its the same size as mine and mine is a 45hp max.

anyway, that ebay auction is dumb:

Transaction Fee: $75 for US Buyers

wtf is that crap. $75 transaction fee..... freakng stupid.

they arent a bank, they cant nickle and dime you to death with hidden fees.

i would keep the johnson and move it to another hull.

Johnsons are my favorite of the outboards, simple, easy, and reliable

Welcome Aboard Unseen
I gotta agree with BigB I d be shoppin for another hull, and not on ebay, look locally where you are there s tons of deals on boats, especially without motors. And there really is nothin like a Johnson runnin out across the water, That ll be my next motor. ;)

i disagree with the guys above, but i also love Lonestar boats. even at $200, if you have to do a little work, it will make a good package. ask for a picture of the rating plate. most charities that are on ebay charge a processing fee. $75.00 is cheap for the fee. be sure there is a title involved. don't buy without a title.

Lone Stars were innovative boats, they were built right, and usually had a higher HP rating, than other brands. super hull designs.

you can go to fiberglassics.com and read the history, and see pictures of the boats. they were the first company, to build trailer for their boats.

the ebay add says rated for 70hp. Is this a new addition since you asked questions? If not I'd go for it. I bought my boat from boatangel this spring, and they were great people to deal with. I got a good deal and the money went to help others. Almost can't go wrong.

It says the boat's rated for 70 - and that is one good looking boat. If I was closer to chicago I might be bidding against you.

Don't believe any of the suggestions you have read so far. The best thing for you to do is to buy a whole new rig and give that Johnny to me.

There are no good answers to either question without knowing the model number of the engine and the specs of the Lone Star.

Even if it runs well, it's age will limit the value IMO. I would put the motor and trailer on CL and start again. How did you hit an I-beam???

Thanks for all the great replies guys, I've been looking locally for another hull, cheapest I have found is $1000. I have $700 in the sea-ray, and just want to get my money back, and start over. If I can get the lone star and make a working package and sell for $900-$950, I would be thrilled. The sea say was my very first boat, and I had it less than week. I hit the ibeam as I was leaving the channel from the Illinois river heading back to the dock. Conservation Police said it looked like an old buoy support or something that was cut, and since the river was just coming off flood stage it was submerged by 2in where normally it would be exposed perhaps? I will go back and check it later this summer.
Thanks again
Brian

Re: Wrecked Boat, Opinion on what to do with 70hp Johnson?

Well, here is my newbie staus, I don't even know what boat I own, It's a sylvan, not a sea-ray, sorry for any confusion. The motor is a '76 Johnson SeaHorse 70el76.
I would be happy if the Lone Star performed well, but it may be too small of a boat.

I beam was about 15ft from current buoy, so I may have been too close to raise ruckas about getting that ibeam marked.

Off topic, just thought I would throw it in here, may ask in proper forum later, where would be a good place to get a cheap prop for that johnson? Current one is rough around the edges.
Thanks
Brian

I think that is a great looking boat. I would buy it and throw that motor on it. It looks in very good shape.

As for the $75 fee, it is a charity. I would think it the extra $75 would go to a good cause, and don't think it a nickle and dime thing. It states it clearly in the ad, so what is hidden? If it was a private seller, then yes, it would be a sham. I wonder if you can deduct the money from your taxes?

I would not bid too much money on it though. No more than $500.

take the prop to a prop shop, might not be more than $30 - $40 repair, depending.

Old cheap fiberglass boats with no motors are usually rot buckets. Not that there aren't some diamonds. But if you're looking for a boat to slap your motor on and go.....go aluminum.
