73 115 johnson 115 esl 73

Starting rebuild on this motor. Began with assembly of rods and pistons and right out of the gate I see what looks to be a problem. Loose bearings with washers appear to have too much play side to side. As you can see in the photo with the rod to one side there is a gap between the rod and the washer. Granted the rod should be close to centered when installed in the bore and conected to the crank but it still seems that the needle bearings will be running well off center of the rod. Gravity will come into play here. Is this a problem?

Installing Wiseco pistons #3174P2. Odd thing is that the space between the piston shoulders (bosses) where the wrist pin runs through is wider than the OMC piston #317806 that I'm replacing by .050" . My OMC parts list says the # for this piston is 385477. Not the aforementioned number. Also the number cast in the rod is 317777. The book calls for 385510.
These are the bearings #WP13-1

Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone know what these two mis matched numbers relate to because I don't think it is this motor.

The width of the rod at the wrist pin is .905 +/-

Re: wrist pin bearings

This is normal as far as I know.
All of my OMC manuals show the rod resting a considerable distance off-center. when you install it, it will center itself to fit the inconsistant, or off-set that occures when boring takes place.
Dhadley may add some insight if I am incorrect, but all I have seen are this way....

No problem. Those are bottom guided rods. Youre good to go. The casting number on that rod is just that, a casting number not a part number.
