wrist pin removal

Hi everyone,
I need a little bit of info from you guys. Such as...how do I get the wrist pins out my 88' 85 hp force pistons. Actually, 86' 85 hp pistons. Seloc doesn't offer this specific info. There are no circlips to remove so I am assuming I need to heat the two wrist pin washers that keep the bearings in place since they rotate as the pin rotates. As always...your help is appreciated tremendously.

Re: wrist pin removal

Matt: You need to press them out. A small 2 ton or more press will do. Also, you need to put a spacer under the rod small end so the needles don't dent the keepers. Chrysler/Force made a special tool for this with one spacing for removal and another for installation. If you are not going to re-use the needles or keeper rings, don't worry. Just press them out. Use some sort of pin just a little smaller than the wrist pin. Also, try to find an aluminum pillow block with approximately the same radius as the piston so you don't deform the skirt when pressing.

Wrist pins are allowed to vary from a close rotating fit to a loose press fit in the piston. And some will take much more effort to remove than others.

Re: wrist pin removal

Hey Frank,
Thanks for replying. No...I'm replacing the pistons. The motor these pistons came out of is an excellent reminder as to why decarbonizing is so important. Despite the nearly brand new condition of the parts inside the engine, two of the rings on one piston were broken due to carbon buildup.
