I am chasing an on/off ignition problem(I love this stuff). I don't have the type of testers that the manual says to use. To make a long story short, I checked the resistance on all six ignition coils and primary leads were OK, but the manual says 1300+/-200 for the secondary leads and I only get 270 to 450 for all six coils. I think I have the wrong coils on my motor.

I talked to a friend today, and he said the specs on his coils(90 gt150) are 270 ohms. Do I have the wrong coils? What would too low resistance on your coils cause?

What manual? Unlikely all coils are bad with same Ohms.

Re: Wrong coils for '77 175 Evinrude?

I have a genuine omc service manual that says my coils should have a resistance between the primary and secondary leads of 1300+/-200 ohms, I referenced the part numbers for my coils and they are different than most crossflow v6's, I think only 76-77 200hp and 77 175 hp use those coils. There are some early 70's 3 cylinders that use them as well. Later crossflow v6's(and probably a lot of other motors)use a pretty common coil that fits a lot of years. I have a friend that has a '90 gt150 and he says his book's specs for the coils are 270 ohms. I assume someone put the wrong coils on my motor at sometime in the past. I am trying to find out what the ramifications of too little resistance in the coils is before I spend $250 for 6 new coils. Will it cause my spark to be weak?

Re: Wrong coils for '77 175 Evinrude?

I found a number on the coils I have, I assume it is a part number. It is 582091, I don't have a parts manual(on order), but I think the correct part number for my coils should be 502888. Can someone tell me if this is correct and what the coils that are on my notor belong to?
