I premixed two cycle "air cooled engine only" oil - type tsc-3 with gas prior to running about 3gal (of 6 total) in my '77 merc 80hp. I realized back at the dock when i looked at the bottle- the boat ran fine but I'm wondering if its a big deal that i didn't use NMMA TC-W3, should i just add 3 more gallons of gas into the tank with the correct (TC-W3) oil and run it out or should i discard it and be concerned about any damage that could have been done? Does anyone know what the difference is between TSC-3 an TC-W3? Thanks in advance.

Re: wrong oil in outboard?

I called a high-end German oil producer and asked this same question. I was given a small, but still expensive, quantity of the cheaper stuff from a neighbor.

They replied that although it probably would not damage the motor in the short term, it is of a lower quality & should not be used in this environment.

The outboard stuff is a better quality oil, and it is designed to dissipate by 80%, within 20 days of entering the water system. It is as ecologically friendly as it can be with todays technology from a biological standpoint.

For the love of your motor, and the fish alike, use the outboard stuff. :D

There is no doubt that you can mix the right TC-W3 oil in the next can of fuel you buy and then add it to the fuel you already have and you will suffer no damage to the engine. Using an air cooled oil in an outboard will generally just cause a little unburned oil and may run out the lower unit when parked!

Not to worry!

thus polluting, unnecessarily.

Contrary to some peoples beleif, "OIL" is a natural occuring substance in nature. There are organism's out there that actually eat oil. What little bit of oil he will introduce to the Preacious eco system will not do any harm whatsoever!!!!!

The difference is probably in the additives and detergent package. You may want to read this:
