WORN out search function*******Hi guys, I am new to posting on this fourm but i am not new to forums in general, I have endlessly searched through this form trying to find an answer and since I couldn't I am here to ask for help. I have a mechanical shift omc 800 sterndrive with a bad upper unit..I tore it apart and spun a bearing on the drive shaft..it ruined 2 bearings and the shaft itself. I recently aquired an electric shift 800 stern drive with the intermediate unit and everything. i have the intermediate unit in the boat still and was wondering your guy's opinion. I know the mechancial shift is more dependable but I have the entire lower unit torn apart and I am just looking to flip this boat for a profit. I picked up the entire second electrical unit for $200 and was wondering how hard it will be to make my boat into electric shift? I also was curious about the steering as this upper unit does not have the gear that the mechancial shift does. I don't believe I can use the electric upper unit and just use the mechanical lower unit correct? I can buy new seals and rebuild the unit but I am trying to find the quickiest, cheapest way, to get this boat back out on the water. The oil is fresh in electric shift unit but that doesnt mean it will shift. Also the cable was cut for the mechanical unit and brand new they are $700<--hahaha. 1079678_10152120429752627_2014974942_n.jpg1145902_10152120426677627_1401963314_o.jpg Thanks in advance for any input!

Re: Wrong out search function... electric/mechanical outdrive question.

odds are it won't work, but it depends on the gear ratios, and whether the electric shift drive is high or low profile. I don't see it in the pics, but something there looks weird - like it's an extended houseboat drive or something super long.

You see, electric shift units have about 4 different generations - some are compatible with mechanical uppers and some aren't. Some allow for the install of the tru-course steering setup and many don't.

And then the gear ratio issue - need to count teeth in the two uppers and then do some math with the Seloc book to see if the overall ratio of the mixed upper and lower will be anywhere in the ballpark.

In the end, it ain't going to be worth it. Truth is, these boats are worth double in parts than they are whole. Sell the parts and push the hull in the dump or make it part of the deal to buy the trailer.
