Wrong place, wrong time

I was docked waiting for a quick storm to blow over this weekend. A houseboat that was anchored about 20 yards away broke loose and ended up hitting my boat. small scratch on the left rear quarter - not a big deal but also broke a chunk off of the cavitation plate. Has anyone ever had to have their cavitation plate repaired. I know this happens to skegs all the time. I have to believe this can be repaired the same way. The good news is nobody was injured. Boats can always be repaired!

it is going to require welding to patch it back together, which means, having to tear down the lower unit, as the heat from welding is most likely going to destroy the seals. you may just consider another case, and put your gut into it.

Have you tried running it as is? I broke a chunk off my cavitation plate early this year (didn't even realize I did it until I was putting muffs on to rinse). I've run it several times since then and to be honest, I can't tell a difference... Ground the edge down smooth to prevent cuts and painted it.

Not worth the expense to fix - IMHO.

Isn't this an insurance job on the Houseboat guy?

Yes, we exchanged names and phone numbers, he seems like a decent enough guy and said he was going to inform his insurance company. I just wondering if it could be repaired verses replaced. It is on a 20 year old boat with an 85 hp Force. The boats in excellent shape but unfortunately it's rated for a maximum 85 hp engine and the Force is running great!

Mark:
I did run it as is. There is a loss of a couple mph and a lot of torque steer to the right. They also hit and bent the exhaust snout which could account for the torque steer. I found and have already purchased one for $16.00 including shipping off of ebay.
