Wrong Spark Plugs! How would the motor run?

I bought my 1989 Skeeter about 3 years ago. It was not until this winter that I found out it is actually a 1985! I never checked the year because I bought it from a dealer who I thought would know the correct details. I have problems with my Evinrude 150 V6 since I bought the boat. I have replaced fuel lines had a couple needles fixed, and I thought I had the problem fixed this winter. I took it out yesterday, and nothing, the boat will not get on a plane. So I am looking at more parts to replace when I come across spark plugs and I say what the heck, It never hurts. Just to make sure, I check the model number to find the correct year, which is and 89, I look up the plugs only to find out that they look no where close to the same as the plugs that are in there. So I try to find the plugs that are in there, I do, and they seem to be for an 86 evinrude. Would having the incorrect plugs in the motor cause me to have problems with getting up?

 I would never reccomend this boat dealer to anybody! I have a friend who just bought a boat yesterday, "lake ready" he took it out, same exact problem as I am having!

Plugs "can" cause problems, mostly a misfire. Feels different than what you explained the problem to be. Yours sounds to be a "fuel" problem. New plugs won't hurt and will take an unknown out of the equation and is not expensive or hard to do. Use anti-seize on the threads and tork carefully. Lake test and be prepared to go through the fuel system: fresh fuel, clean carbs with floats set correctly, fuel pump, clean fuel filters, good fuel lines, (may look good outside, inside swollen shut). Good luck. I had this problem last year, boat sat several years. Was in the internal passages of the carbs. Complete dissambley and a long soak in "real" carb cleaner and run soft wire through all the passages. Good luck.

well the plugs that are in there are BUHXW-1 and the book says I need BZ7HS-10. The plugs that are in there dont have a spark gap, and quite frankly, I have no Idea how they work. I am not sure if this would solve my problem, But I know for a fact that they need to atleast be the correct plugs. My problem right now is my boat is rather hard to start when sitting over night but runs fine once i get her started. I can get my rpms to where they need to be, but once I put her in the water, she will start, idle correctly, and run at slow speeds, but when I open her up, she does not want to move. I will start out strong, and then will get about 50% and stay there, never getting on a plane. BUT, occasionally, she will take off for a second or two, then resume where she was.

Sounds like you have a fuel delivery issue. Start with a carb clean/rebuild.

The gaps you mention are surface gap plugs compared to the typical air gap.

Re: Wrong Spark Plugs! How would the motor run?

I started to tear into the carbs around 12 and just finished putting them back on! Id say pretty good for a construction worker! lol I noticed a couple things that might have caused my problems, First was that when two of the carbs were put back on, they were sitting tight against a couple fuel lines. However, I do not think they were pinched tight enough to cause my stalling. I continued to tear it all apart and as I got to my gaskets, I noticed an orange residue. After I pulled all the carbs off, I pulled the float bowls off and realized that the orange residue was a liquid gasket. I began to clean everything and saw that the orange had dried in several spots where im sure it did not belong. especially when I saw where one hole was about 90% clogged from this. I was on a fuel line inlet. I also had one needle that was stuck, I popped it up and it began working properly. I know that I probably should have changed it, But i didnt. As well as a few gaskets. Nothing looked to the point that it wasnt reusable after being cleaned. So I put everything back on and made sure not to pinch any lines. Turned the key, without choking the motor, it fired right up! Im not sure who put the liquid gasket on there, but they need to be shot! Its a little windy here today, so I am not sure if I will take it out today or not, but I will let you know as soon as I do! Thanks for your help!
