Wrong spark plugs leads to wrong cylinders ?

Hey everybody,
I have a 1972 Johnson 85hp. After setting my points I may have accidentally put the wrong spark plug leads on the wrong cylinders. Looking at the motor from the back (standing behind the boat) I thought from left to right the spark plug lead order coming from the cap was as follows
Far left (far port side) #2. Next, would be #1, then the coil lead, then #4, then #3. That would be counting counterclockwise from the far left/port side.
I understand the firing order is 1-2-3-4. Top port cylinder = #1. Bottom Starboard = #2. Bottom Port = #3. Top starboard = #4.
I think as long as I have the firing order correct, and knowing that the rotor travels in a circle, then I can put the leads on in a correct order.
Does anybody know if I have that right?

The reason I am asking is because the previous owner had them in a random order (one of the many reasons he could not get the motor to run).
Thanks!

You will quickly tell if the plugwires are in the wrong order. You will get strong backfiring when trying to start the engine.

Thanks for the reply,
To avoid strong backfiring I was wondering if anybody knew if the info in my previous post was correct. To me, logically it makes sense. But, If I'm wrong feel free to call me a dumbass. :D

The cap does have the numbers, but you can only see them when the flywheel is off (poor design if you ask me). It's partial stupidity on my part actually for not numbering the terminal when I had it all apart (lesson learned). I thought I memorized them...now I'm second guessing myself.

Daviet, I will look at that link right now. Thanks for the info...again!

I'm always worried about forgetting stuff like that. I take pics and video of whatever I'm about to take apart so if I screw up...I can put it back together.

Re: Wrong spark plugs leads to wrong cylinders ?

I just analyzed the diagram. It appears that from the coil lead clockwise the order is 1-2-3-4. That's how I have it set up (whew).

Now I'm gonna clean the carbs, put it back together, and fire it up for the first time in a long time...at least the first time since I bought it. Who knows how long it sat before that.
I'll let you all know when it's purring like a kitty...an old, smelly, hydro-electric kitty.

Thanks again!

Update: Holy @#$%. Carbs full of oil/ gum/gunk/crud.
I didn't think carburetors could get that dirty.
At this point It'll be tomorrow before I get them back on.
I'll update again tomorrow...hopefully better news.
