in the process of re-installing my engine, i broke the y-pipe. i purchased another y-pipe that had the same part # stamped into it and it doesn't seem to be right. of course, the old part is long gone to a local scrap guy that drives around the neighborhood so i can not measure them to check and see if there is a difference. it seems as if the new part's pipes are shorter for the shorter risers. i know for a fact that i have the same part number, i have a picture of my old y-pipes damage and the part number is stamped into the part. is there a chance that the wrong number was stamped into the part? i can't see there being 2 different length pipes with the same part number? thanks in advance

Part numbers do change, get superseded to the new number. But in your case, it could be a casting number, marking a particular mold it was cast from.
