I just found out that my mechanic put a #5005440 thermostat in my 87 Jonnyrude J90TLCUR (port side only). It's supposed to have a #0393659. Are they the same size and open same temp? Where can I find open temp for #5005440? I have been having some trouble with temp alarm until stat opens.

Re: Wrong thermostat?

Shop.evinrude.com list several equivalent part numbers for the thermostats. 5005440 is one of them!

Stat may be opening a little hot ??
Test it in hot water and a thermometer. Should open around the 140 F mark as far as I know. If it is opening at a higher temp then you may have a bad stat. Just checked both of mine at the weekend and both started opening at 140 f

Re: Wrong thermostat?

Well, Capt., one of them is opening late. While I was overseas, my wife had it worked on by a local mechanic. He installed one (1) new stat (5005440) last May. Sometimes the heat alarm goes off for awhile until the stat/s? open at about 180 or 190. Then she runs fine the rest of the day at about 140. I will probably install a new set this winter myself. Thanks for the info.

Yep, replace both then you know where you stand. Have you done the hand on the heads test ?? You should be able to hold your hand on the heads for about 4 seconds without discomfort.

No, I have not, but I will. It looks like I will have to drill holes to get easily at the housing bolts. I see that I can get the whole kit'n'kaboodle, i.e., springs, stats and gaskets for that model. My end-of-season project, I suppose.
Thanks again Capt.

Not sure about your motor but it's amazing what you can get at with a 1/4" drive and a couple of "knuckle" adapters along with a few varying length extension bars. Takes a little time and effort to get out and replace the bolts etc but is well worth it.
Shift linkages can actually be fun now !!!!
