whats up with the transom seal gasket on pre-alpha gimble housings??

my gimble housing (1973 pre alpha) had a flat rubber gasket, w/holes for the mounting bolts to pass though, that goes between the gimble housing and the boat transom...but the new one i just picked up, GLM, is just round foam rubber...don't realy see how this will make a seal or even be installed???

doesn't anyone make the flat rubber gasket?? or will i have to make my own??
:confused::confused:

Howdy,

My guess is that you want #44 below (From Dougrussel) It's an awful picture..... My guess is that GLM either doesn't make the right gasket or they only provide the one for the newer models.

Or, you might be able to use the newer one if you glue it to the gimbal mount. it would flatten out probably....

Just use a bead of 3M 5200 sealer instead, as the flat gasket has a nasty habit of squeezing out causing major water leaks.

The original gasket for that outdrive was probably a flat cork gasket, which is what I replaced my MC-1 gasket with a year or two ago. The MC-1 gimbal ring doesn't have the groove necessary for that round gasket to seat properly.

I ended up buying a good quality sheet of gasket material from Napa - it is a cork / rubber impregnated sheet. Very nice material. Cut my own after making a template. There are a couple of different gaskets that you can still buy. I "borrowed" this picture ;) from an online site that sells parts:

I used one of the gaskets Fishermark posted, but had to install it twice as it slipped on me while torquing down. The second time around I glued it to the gimble housing with 3M weather stripping adhesive (or bellows adhesive) so it wouldn't slip, applied a thin layer of BoatLife sealant to the transom side of the gasket, lightly torqued it down (5ftlb?), let the sealant dry a day, then did the final torquing, 18-20ftlb or whatever it is.

I waited a month or so for one pop up on Ebay, it was about $20.

Oh yeah, to original gasket wasn't a rubber gasket, it was faom, that crushed down and over the years turned hard, which looks like rubbber.

thanks for keeping my sanity incheck.....

i'm liking the idea of just using some 5200 to seal it up....
