I just bought a 27ft 1980 Bayliner Explorer with a 4cyl volvo engine.

My first of many Questions is I would like to install a propane rv heater in the cabin. I am going to vent the heater out the aft bulkhead. Where could I mount the Propane bottle? Could I mount it in the engine compartment? Or is that unsafe?

That leads to my second question, I want to have a A/C Generator onboard. Could I run it in the engine compartment? I realize I would have to pipe the exhaust overboard and run the compartment blower. Does anyone else do this or is this unsafe to?

Ahoy, Ben.

Nix on the propane heater. Propane is heavier than air and any leak would go to your bilge and turn your boat into a bomb. Use a liquid fuel catalytic heater.

As to the Genset, I don't have any suggestions there. I am sure others have some good ideas for you.

Good luck. :)

There are a number of ways to heat your boat, the best way for you depends on how you intend to use the boat and when you want it heated...at the dock only or when running down the lake. You can get diesel fired heaters that only require 12V power here: http://www.navstore.com/webasto.asp

Another site with several other options is here:
http://www.****insonmarine.com/shop/shopdisplaycategories.asp ****enson has some systems that operate just like the heater in your car. They utilize waste heat from the engine cooling water.

If you need A/C...consider a reverse cycle heat/air system which will do both. This will require a genset...probably 4kW on a boat that size. These are typically mounted in the engine room and will also power your lights, microwave, frig. etc. The smaller, portable generators that put out 1000 to 2000 watts are generally not ignition protected and will need to be secured on deck somewhere to be safe.

I sure would like to see the censor turned off...the * symbol in the above address is replacing D.I.C.K., short for Richard :p

Wallas diesel combination stoves/heaters are a good choice: a friend of mine had one that come in his 22' C-Dory. Even though his is a gas OB, he doesn't find it hard to carry a gallon of diesel which "lasts forever," he claims. Of course, he's not in Wyoming, so I suspect you may need more fuel.
The advantage is: 1) no smell; 2) diesel is a lot less volatile than other choices; 3) you can use it for a cooking stove as well. I see lots of dealers for them on the net.

This is a duplicate post. See "Bayliner questions".
