Re: XP Police Antivirus?????

If you do an internet search of this fake antispyware tool, you'll find lots of info. It seems to be very much like any number of other malicious items floating around these days. Another one that has been seen quite a lot lately is "XP2009 Antivirus."

I have used Smitfraudfix and Malwarebytes to remove such items, with great success. Both are free downloads.

The microsoft security homepage offers the latest version of MSRT, malicious software removal tool, which will scan your computer, report on and remove stuff like that. I'd recommend you download it to your desktop (save button) instead of just hitting the run button. I've used the run button before and lost it somewhere in the harddrive.

Re: XP Police Antivirus?????

There are some nasty trojans out there nowadays. I'm easily a PC expert and still managed to get one on my PC (misclick, doh!) which took a full 3 nights to remove completely. It actually embedded itself into the logon system, so the second I logged in, it was active and replicating.. nasty stuff. People are getting better at writing trojans which fight to stay alive.

Like the guys above said, there is a utility to remove nearly all of them (after all, many trojans are simply a new package for the same old trojan). Just search google with a filename or two or some identifying details and you will find the exact cleaner you need. Download it and run it in safe mode (f8 at boot). You can't remove many of them without being in safe mode, as they are running and fighting to remain that way.

Timely thread. I just got hit with the dread Vundo Trojan a couple of days ago and I'm looking for ways to get rid of it. McAffee hasreported blocking and removing it about 30 times already, 7 or 8 times just this morning, and it always responds with a random popup. Obviously McAfee is powerless. Going to try SpyWare Doctor unless someone has a better suggestion.

Thanks, lowkee.

In the interim here I downloaded and ran Spyware doctor. When it asked to reboot I hit Yes and then the whole thing hung. I finally had to hold the power switch to shut down. I guess I'll run it again and try the one you linked as well.

One good sign, I was able to re-enable Windows updates which had been disabled by good ol Vundo. And McAfee hasn't barked since restart. While I was trying to download Spyware it must have popped up 30 or 40 times that it had blocked the trojan.

The puter is about 6 years old so, worst case, I just retire it and start over.

I'll keep you posted on the ongoing saga.

2nd time around! Try this bassman.

It's free, it's Microsoft and it worked for me when nothing else did. I also had Malwarebytes work a while ago, when nothing else would even run long enough to find an issue. The malware would shut down all the other scanners in midstream. Malwarebytes was not able to find anything this last time around.

I ended up make an icon on the desktop so I could access it quickly if I ever need it agian.

Many of these viruses will reinstate themselves after being cleaned, if you don't run the removal tool in "safe mode." Running the tools in windows' normal mode does not shut the malware down, which allows it to keep replicating instructions alive.

Re: XP Police Antivirus?????

Well, the trojan is gone. Unfortunately so is everythig else.

Without going through the whole lengthy tale of woe and intrigue, I reached a point where I had no choice but to delete the partition and reinstall XP. I am now trying to rebuild the last five years of my computer life. Hint: before using SpyWare Doctor, be sure you have your valuable files on a memory stick.

Would have been interesting to try some of these other cures.

I am only online now because I am pirating a neighbor's wireless network. Can't get mine up. I had no idea I was so dependent on this stupid puter and the internet. There's a lesson in there somewhere.

Well, I guess I'll spend the next couple of hours with Windows update. This ain't a fast connection, but he was the only one I could catch.

Thanks everyone for the attempted help.

Ha, ha! I was just re-reading the thread and this struck me. Too bad there's no youtube link of me when I figured out I was going to have to reinstall windows. The cat is still hiding under the bed. It only got worse after that. About six o'clock I went out a bought a bottle of scotch. I'm punishing that jug as we speak.

I sure wish you had tried Malwarebytes before killing your partition. This removal tool has the info on XP Police and would have safely removed it. Take a look at this video - I think you'll find it interesting.

Well between One Care and Spyhunter I managed to get things under control.I ran them in Safe Mode and deleted their Icons in safe and normal modes. They are not out but will be soon.

At least I am functional.

Re: XP Police Antivirus?????

I feel your pain , still doing surgery on my nephew's pc after he got hit with XP Antivurus 2009 , followed shortly by a nasty Vundo variant/s .

Found the lynchpin this morning that allowed AVAST to run , now cleaning up the last little remnants with Malwarbytes .

Seems the freakin thing had embedded itself as 2 seperate non plug and play device drivers , which were the ones stopping any removal attempts cold .

Almost gave up and hosed the partition . He needs a respectable OS anyway .
Something in a Debian based Linux would be just the ticket .
But , he likes his World Of Warcraft , sooo ..

I hope he stays off of Myspace , or he WILL get Linux .
He can then learn REAL computing or buy his own freekin' computer , instead of digging out my spare rigs .
