I picked up a free junk boat today with a mercury engine on it and no ID plate. I have a few qustions. The motor has great compression on all 6 and starts if gas is put into the plug holes. I'd like to get it running but need to ID it for a book.

The motor is a V6 EFI. On the front plastic fuel system cover it is marked2.4 L
On The Metal plug on top of the starboard block it is marked 200.

1. This is a 200 HP?

2 What is the year range of these EFI Motors?

3. I have a nice one piece cowling from a 2000 135 Optimax. I have the upper cowling and the lower skirt halfs. Can I use that cowling on this motor? The 2 piece cowling thats on it is pretty rough.

4. If I put 50:1 directly into the spark plug holes the motor will crank right up until the gas is gone and then die. It wont start otherwise. I can verify gas is getting to the vapor separator. What is the most likely problem? The EFI electronics?

Sounds like ya got tha early efi motor, '86 ta early '89 if it has clam shell cowl and is unmolested. Your cowls won't just swap out. Ya gotta drill some holes for tha front bracket. Rear bracket will bolt on. Most of tha '86, '87, '88 efi's were junk and way over rated. That plastic thingy with 2.4 marked on it is tha ecu. Probably tha culprit on tha no fuel part. You would need ta pull tha entire fuel delivery system off and go completly through it. Injectors, vst, mech. pump, electric pump and probably replace tha ecu itself. Sounds like tha pump driver (in tha ecu) is done for sure.............Best thing ta do would be ta put carburators on it. Tha carburator motors of that time run just as good if not better with far fewer problems.................JMO

Oh yeah. Its a 200 block but Merc called 'em 220 Laser. Why? I have no idea. A good carb 200 motor could/would run circles 'round most of 'em............

Ok Unless I can find a cheap used one I think the ECU costs more then the motor is worth. You can acutally put carbs on the thing?

Is there a proceedure anywhere to convert it to carbs?

1. Find a donor motor.
2. Swap parts.

Ignition is the same. Carbs, fuel pump, reed plate, bleed lines, and linkages, and harness should do it. You can probably chop up the harness to fit. Shouldn't be a big difference in the wiring, just the ECU stuff, and the water separator link to the oil alert. Might need a different cowl. I've heard there's enough difference between efi and carb that it won't fit.

It should have the dual reg 40 amp battery charger on it.

Actually, the motor is junk. Send it to me for disposal.:D

hope it helps

OK you all have me intrigued on the Carburetor thing. Carburetors I know and love. I can relate to them. EFI is a strange beast with no face.

So I don't have to mess with any of the timing advance linkage etc? Just swap out the EFI from the reed plate out to a set of V6 200 carbs?

What Year and HP sets could I use from the Reed plate out? Can I take a set off say an old black max? Tons of those on the scrap heap.
