I pulled my tired 260 V8 mercruiser, 97 model, out of my boat last sunday, After an extremely busy 6days at work, im ready to start installing the new 2006 mercruiser 383 mag motor, that i purchased new and complete. my question is this,,,What is the purpose of replacing the Y pipe? it takes a special 12 point socket to remove it, and ive been unable to find one. does a y pipe go bad? the new motor has a new one, but looks identical to the old. if i have to wait another week and locate the socket, its no big deal, but if not, i can go ahead and drop this jewel in... any advice would be appreciated.
thanks hud

That bolt takes a Standard 12 point Socket,.....3/8ths", or 7/16ths",.. I Forget..... Sears sells Millions of them........

As for the Y-pipe,...... If your present 1 is still in Serviceable Condition,.......Sometimes they tend to Rot......

You're Right,.......... Why Change it...........

Re: Y pipe Replacement

it looks like a reverse torex,,,if i replace it, ive been told to just massage the o ring seal with a little grease, is this correct? the time to remove the engine vs the time to do it right the first time makes this important to me
thanks guys

I did a shield assy on an 04 bravo unit last week and the bolts were 3/8ths 12pt.
were it me I would installthe new Y pipe and coat the oring with grease or perfect seal and use thread locker on the bolts.
a new oring would be even better.
if the oring leaks water will enter the bilge.

Re: Y pipe Replacement

Went to Home Depot, lowes, auto zone, harbor frieght, and advance auto, finally went to Sears, they were the only ones that had a 12 pt socket set.they must have 100 different socket sets in that place... anyway, got the old y pipe off, looks good inside, but the flappers in the upper part, were history, part of one side, on one flapper, still there
mississippi river water and mud must be rough on these parts,,,, im glad now i took the time to replace the y pipe, ill keep y0ou posted on progress

IF the pipe is good, no need to replace it. The flappers get burned up during overheats conditions when impellers go bad, or water is cut off from the exhaust for some reason. They are replaceable without replacing the complete Y pipe.

I've had good luck using 12 pt metric sockets on those bolt heads.
John
