I have a 1993 Monterey that I bought in 1996. It has the 4.3 litre Yamah stendrive. I know, I know, but who would have thought back in 1996 that getting parts would one day be an issue? Actually, except for replacing a shift cable a few years ago, it's never given me a minute of trouble. My question has to do with the exhaust system rather than the outdrive, I think.

A couple of years ago it started making an intermittent clicking sound when idling, but it goes away about about 1800 rpm's. I've isolated the source to the starboard side exhaust manifold, down low where it goes behind the engine. Does anyone know if there is a valve or flap inside there that could be sticking? I know Cap'n Ken is the guru on these things, so maybe he knows what could be going on. ??

There were shutterd in the Y pipe. Items, 9,10, and 11
Check with a Yamaha dealer with the part numbers below. They will have the parts diagrams, rather they can get the outdrive parts will be the question.

Re: Yamah Sterndrive question

Is this intended to be helpful, or is it a mistake?

Well,..... I 1st Welcomed you aboard to the forum....
Then, not having worked on a Yamaha, I Assume they used shutters....
By your discription, it sounds like they're burnt up/ wore out...
The clicking would be the ssteel parts clacking about, without their rubber coatings...
That tells Me, they Used to be in there....

Sooo, No, it's not a mistake,...
Just an effort to convey the thought that Yes, there's shutter valves in there, or Was...
Being a single digit typist, explains the lack of keystrokes...

I guess the next step should be You taking it apart, 'n Look...

No, I don't know where you can buy new 1s, atleast in North America, unless Capt. Ken has some...

THANKYOU! This very helpful. I've actually sold the boat, but told the guy who bought it I would try to get a better diagnosis and fix. I was on the verge of pulling the boot that is just above the shutter to see what I could see, but the boat sold before I could get to it.
