I hope someone can clear this up for me. After winter storage, today I fired up my engine- runs fine- was peeing fine. Then I dropped it into gear both forward and reverse, then back to neutral. Then I noticed water leaking from my cowling into the boat well. I shut it down, pulled the cowling and searched for the source of water and was unable to find it. Then, when I started the engine again there was no pee trail. I can understand my impeller likely went bad especially since it has never been changed (my bad- I know). The mystery is, why would water come from inside the cowling as a result of a bad impeller? I would love to hear from anyone with ideas about this, as I am clueless.
Thank you
Louie...

Ayuh,... The Real Mystery is Why are you posting this in the Trailer forum,..??

Try the Yamaha outboard forum...

Did you run it with the cowling Off, so you could SEE where it's coming from,..??

Check the pee tube hose where it connects to the fitting that exits the bottom of the cowling.

The water pump/impeller draws water up from the intake on the lower unit and courses it thru the engine.....then makes it's way out, via the pee hole in the bottom of the cowling.
Normally there is a plastic fitting of various types.....where this hose is attached, as it exits the cowling.
This fitting most likely has a clamp of various sorts on the hose.
Many times this clamp and or an old and cracked hose is the culprit, as it loosens/cracks with time and water that has seen the inside of your engines cooling passages is now looking to get out, under a bit of pressure.

Take the cowling off, start the engine with adequate water flow, ID the pee water hose exit point at the bottom of the cowling and see if that is where your getting water from.

Next I would check the thermostat housing gasket.
If you operate in saltwater, there will be telltale white "salty" residue around that housing at the leaky spot and downward as it drips out.
Again, start the engine with adequate water, and visually inspect this housing for leaks.....

Re: Yamaha 01 150 HPDI Impeller Mystery

It should not be a mystery to an old timer, as you can see- I am a cadet! And this forum isn?t as self explanatory as it could be- My apologies for posting in the wrong area.

But for other misguided folks I will continue with a closure to this issue as you never know, there may be someone else that gets here by mistake as well.

The boat is in the shop as we speak and what I've learned is the problem is not the impeller- it is a broken regulator/ rectifier water jacket housing. Now- I'd love to know why there was water trapped in there to freeze as I winterize the same for the past 10 years with no issue. Maybe compressed air in the pee hole may prevent this- I don?t know but would like to know what others think.
And yes, you don?t need to tell me this is in the wrong category- its already been pointed out that I didn?t know what I was doing on my very first post. It was no picnic trying to figure out how to post in the first place.
