Yamaha 115 Four Stroke....Making Oil?

I have a 2002 Yamaha 115 Four Stroke with 38 hours that typically has not been used at slow speeds. Previously I posted a concern about my prop nut/hub being extremely black from carbon and wonder whether the motor was running too rich.

Subsequent to that post, I talked to some other 115 owners who indicated that they had no such carbon build up on their prop hubs. A visit to my local Yammy dealer produced no answer as to whether or not such carbon build up was normal, but they did offer to run a computer diagnostic on the motor.

My last oil change was done by the dealer at 20 hours. After reading in this forum about some Yamahas "making oil", I checked my oil level and found it about 1.5 inches above the dipstick maximum. Three questions:

1. Is this overfill of oil the most likely cause of my carbon build up?
2. Would this lead to making oil?
3. Could it damage my motor?

Any responses would be appreciated.

1. Possibly, but you should notice oil burning by sight and smell.
2. No. See FAQ about "Making Oil".
3. Carbon isn't good for a motor, so that could lead to problems. Overfull oil damage? Not likely. It'd get real messy under the hood before any damage could occur. Then again, if it's overfull due to gas getting into the oil, then yes.

WillyBWright,

Thanks for the info.

Can you venture a guess on what else might be causing my carbon buid up?

DJ,

Thanks for the link....already read it. Do you have any opinions on my carbon build up, high oil level, and/or what I should do?

change your oil now but only refill it 2/3rds. this is the level it should be at. its possible it was overfilled at the 20 hour. it takes very little to get it that far over the full mark, likely 1/2 a quart or so. if you dont want to spend the money on more oil just drain some to achieve the same result.

typically how much trim do you run your engine at on what kind of boat

BenC,

My motor is on a 17 foot Alumacraft Competitor fishing boat. Typically I run with my motor trimmed up as much as possible.

rule out the overfilled at the twenty hour by dumping some oil. and recheck it after your next run. if you are making oil after a normal days fishing/whatever likely you have a problem. i dont service many f strokes that arent at or very near the full mark. yamaha recomends not filling past the 2/3rds on the dipstick get your level to that and go from there. the carbon could be another issue(thats related). to start have your thermostat checked. its a very simple job that will rule out incorrect op temp as a cause.
