Re: yamaha 115

The letter "U" designates that it is a 1996 model but the whole model number should be 115 TLRU. Double check the letters.

IF you are sure that the letter "E" is right after the 115, then that makes it a 1984 to 1990, depending on the last letter. Later 115's did not use the letter "E".

Re: yamaha 115

I checked it again and it is a 115 ETLJ so it looks like it is a 1986 model, older than I was lead to believe, but it still seems to be an excellent running motor. Are there any known problems or maintaince isues to look out for with these motors? What years interchange as far as parts?
I believe that I got a good enough deal for the package that the motor can be replaced if needed, but right now I just need to get it idled down some and possibly adjust the shift linkage if a slower idle does not help with the slight grinding when it is put in gear. Time to look for a manual. It currently has 135 psi on all four cylinders.

I had a 115 Yamaha for several years and it always ran like a top, but do get a manual for it, learn to drain your carbs, change water pump impeller, lower unit fluid, install a water/fuel separater. Good Luck!

IF the motor has saltwater use, then there could be potential corrosion problems that might pop up.

One was the shift shaft rusing to a point that it would twist at the corroded away area instead of shifting out of gear. Other problems were the engine block corroding from the inside out. Usually a pin hole would appear near the top of the head or the block and spray saltwater over the motor.

IF its running fine now, keep a close eye on things and flush it well after use.

Re: yamaha 115

Pretty sure that it was a freshwater only motor, was reported to have come off of a local bass boat that was left out to rot away. Does not appear to have been in salt water much if at all by the appearance. A few nicks in the cowl paint on the sides and the top is faded from the sun. It is on a pontoon now. It currently is idling at about 1000 rpm in gear so I know it is high. I will get my hands on a manual before I start making adjustments. I am fairly familiar with Johnson/Evinrudes and this motor looks very simular to those. Besides it is 15 degrees out this morning so I can wait a while.

Re: yamaha 115

From a bass boat to a pontoon boat will require a significant change of propeller size. Make sure the motor is running about 5500 rpm with a light load. That way when you load up the boat with people and coolers, the top rpms should be above 5000 to keep from lugging the motor and damaging the pistons.

Back then, those motors would elongate the wrist pin holes and start to rattle if it had light cases of detonation from overpropping. Heavy detonation lead to disintegrated pistons.

Re: yamaha 115

Thanks prop had already been changed out to a 13 1/2 - 15 and motor set up on the boat. Turns 5500 rpm with two of us on board, we were probably pushing 500lbs between the two of us plus all the gear on the boat. Prior owner needed money so he priced it to sell it today. The boat was worth almost the total price without a motor. It is usually not like me to not haggle, but in this case I did not even bother.

Sounds like you did very well. Congratulations on getting it propped correctly.
