Just purchased the boat.
The seller had been using it this Summer, when it started running poorly (his description). He took it to the dealer who diagnosed low compression on one cylinder as the cause. He decided to sell the tired looking rig rather than spend ?dollars? to get it going.
It was not possible to warm it up for a real compression test, no battery available and no muffs, but I pulled the plugs and pulled it through several times with a wrench while holding the compression tester in with my other hand . The port cylinders matched within 1psi. The top starboard was about 10% less, bottom about 50% less.
The prop turns the right way as I shift it from forward to reverse, with no strange or crunchy noises. The engine makes no clatters or clunks as it turns, just the whoosh of the air in the plug holes. The oil in the lower unit was clean, no metal and no milkiness.
The plug insulators were all dark chocolate in color with the lower right one _maybe_ just a fraction lighter in tone. No discolored paint on the heads or anywhere else. I did a field expedient bearing play test on each piston (tdc then about halfway back down, push on the top of the piston with a steel rod) and felt no slack. No visible damage to the pistons or to the teeny strip of cylinder wall I could see with an LED on a wire and a 2x loupe.
One dubious point. There was about an ounce of oil pooled up in the forward end of the bottom cowling. I didn't see any specific source. The big oil tank in the hull has a hole chafed in the forward top corner and "repaired" with duct tape. :0 The engine mounted oil tank is about 1/2 full.
I have some muffs on the way and a shop manual and will try to get this thing started and warmed up for a real compression test this weekend. I think I will decarbon it and retest the compression.
Is there anything specific I should look for and are there any opinions on whether this model is a good/bad/indifferent outboard?
Thanks!
Note the sporty grey/green cammie paint.
