Hi,

Tried to figure out how to overcome this issue: the side oil tank does not fill up anymore. This puts the engine on security. I checked the main oil tank, the pump of the main oil tank too they are fine. Only way to fill it up is manually by turning the key on but not starting the engine then there is a switch on the engine itself which allow this small tank to be filled up. I

Is it possible this comes from the CDI this is a suggestion of my dealer but before engaging into this repair (quite expensive indeed) i would like to receive a third party opinion...

Many thanks in advance!

The sensors on that shaft that goes into your engine oil tank could also be bad. When the float hit's a low point it should kick in the main tank pump to fill your engine tank. When that float comes up to the mark, the remote tank pump should quit.

Ask your dealer to ask one of his mechanics before going to the CDI.

Thank you for the quick answer. Will try this too. Any idea how these sensors can be checked? I would like to do it myself if possible an if no special tools are required. Thanks a lot.

It's been too long ago that I did steady work on Yamaha's to give you a definite how to check. I do remember having to replace a few of those tank sensor assemblies when I was at a dealership.

You might have to wait for one of the regulars to answer that, if they will.

Thanks Bob for the information and for sharing your experience/ knowledge. Will try to get a spare one and replace it. Will see if it comes from this.

You can pull the float out of the small tank and dip it up and down in a glass of oil. As you raise the float, it should start pumping oil into the small tank. I replaced my float as part of trial and error.

My new float still wouldn't stop the oil pump--overflowing through plastic lines into the engine--heavy smoke and fouled plugs while running. The problem was a $240 oil sensor (mounted on the head.) I replaced it, and never had another problem.

The actual oil injection is a pretty simple diaphram/mechanical system--other than pumping oil from the big remote tank to the little tank on the engine.

Thanks for the info. I am away from the engine and will process those tests as soon as I have a chance. The point of the censor on the head is good to now too. Was it located on the CDI? CDI seems more expensive to change (around $1200).

Thanks guys for refreshing my memory regarding a “sticky float”. Going through this issue now, as I had several years ago. I created an account just so I could thank you!
