Hi all. I just had my waterpump go bad on my 84 150 Yamaha V6. (ETLK) No tell-tale. I bought the full rebuild kit from my Yamaha. I have replaced impellers on my 70 Evinrude numerous times so I am not a total newby. Other than pieces in the pump area I never went through any special process to remove hunks of damaged impeller elsewhere on the 70 and never had a secondary problem.

My question is:

Should I be concerned about getting pieces of the damaged impeller caught in other places in the cooling system? Could it cause other cooling problems and if so, what do I do to remove the impeller pieces? Backflush through the tell-tale? Your input is greatly appreciated as usual!!!

Re: Yamaha 150 Waterpump

Try to account for all the pieces when you do it. Even if you find all of them, backflushing is still a good idea. With the gearcase off and motor vertical, backflush thru the telltale and the thermostat holes. Water works better than compressed air. Sometimes debris works into the springs on the thermostats, so they should be checked anyhow. Gravity may take some of the chunks down to the intake on the gearcase. Check there too.
