Looking at a used 1987 ranger with the same year yamaha v150 on it. Its for my son and about the max of what he can afford right now. Boat itself is in great shape, don't know much about the Yamaha motors of that year. If anyone has any knowledge of problems for that motor or any info at all to offer it would be greatly appreciated. He is gonna take it out for a test tomorrow and I think I should have him take it in for at least compression testing. Any things we should be checking for specifically other than the water test and compression check?

Thanks

also check the gear oil for water.
if its saltwater carefully check the shift shaft.
other than that the 87 150 was a solid motor all the way around.

Re: Yamaha 150

Ok, my boy met the owner and they water tested the boat. He said the motor fired right up with just a small amount of smoke at starting, after that no noticeable smoke from the motor whatsoever. Steering is new teleflex no feedback so that works well. The motor idle's nicely and hole shot brought the boat to plane within a few seconds. 17'10" Ranger, light load with two people, 5500 rpm and 62 mph GPS. From what my son says the motor has lots of life and pulled hard all the way through the rpm range. I believe the carbs were rebuilt recently because it had been sitting for sometime.

So, for a twenty year old Yamaha this motor seems to be in really good shape, will get the compression tested tomorrow hopefully.

Re: Yamaha 150

Engine was looked over and compression tested, talked to the tech who checked it out. Cylinders checked out at 125 I believe the centers were at 120, power head got an a+ and he summed the motor up as very nice and well kept. Gear oil was clear and the mechanic also gave the boat itself a big thumbs up. My son is taking the cash over this eve and picking up the boat, he has a big smile on his face, lol.
