yamaha 2000 F40 tapping sound

I was out trolling last fall when the engine started tapping, I looked back and saw the gas line connecter at the engine came off....I put it back on, it locked, and the Tapping stopped....guess i noticed it before the engine quit...everything was ok!.....would the fuel pump make that noise..was pretty loud...engine has maybe 225 hrs.

yes it will make that noise. Fuel pump is driven by a lobe on the camshaft, no fuel in the pump will cause a tapping noise. not sure why...didnt ask that question at yamaha school

Thanks for the reply.....is it possible, because without the dampenning effect of the fuel,it kind of starts to chatter against the cam....
