I have a Yamaha f150 2006. 220hrs. Just installed it. When I am on the water, And shift to forward, it is grinding. I took the shifter cable off and was shifting the engine with my fingers.

It was very easy to push it toward the stern and into reverse.

When I tried to pull it into forward (toward the bow) , I could not do it with my fingers. It would just ratchet and grind.

I was not strong enough to force it into forward, although I was pulling way harder than into reverse.

No matter where we put the end of the cable, It would not go into forward without a big grinding sound. Yes we were shifting fast and not easing into it.

please help

I just saw this in the force forum, lets see if I learned anything. First motor off remove shift cable and throttle cable push down on the shift rod while turning the prop clock wise did forward gear engage, second pull up on shifter rod while turning the prop counter clock wise, did reverse gear engage. If it did engage in forward and reverse ,Then there is a problem with the cables.,because the shift rod adjusted fine.If you can't engage forward or reverse then you need to adjust the shift rod and its not the cables. Good luck

Did you test drive the motor when you bought it or run it. Sounds like the linkage needs to be adjusted or a problem with the clutch dog and forward gear.

need to take apart to see if some linkage, parts, or shafts are bent.

Has the lower unit been off recently?( like previous owner installing new water pump).... If so he may not have had lower unit in neutral And the control lever in neutral when he bolted the lower unit back up.....maybe drop the lower unit and check this first....
