UNBELIEVABLE...

Unbelievable means winning the lottery...twice. Unbelievable means getting a good deal on the Golden Gate Bridge. And now, it also means having a brand new Yamaha outboard blow a piston. So, as I pack my bags for San Fran and begin dreaming of what I'll do with all my winnings, let me tell you the rest of an unbelievable story.
Just over a month ago I purchased a 250HPDI at Radcliff Marine in Belhaven, NC. This motor replaced a five year old Johnson 250 on a 23' Seacraft. The dealer, Ricky Radcliff, gave exceptional service and had me up and running by the 1st of December. By the first week of January the motor had only 30 hours on it and was doing fine.
On January 9th while heading out to Hatteras Inlet, the motor had a noticeable drop in rpms. When I slowed down there was a knocking/baning noise. We weren't far from the dock, so we were able to get back safely. On Tuesday Jan 12, I trailered the boat over to Ricky in Belhaven. His crew was quick to the task and soon had the left side heads off the motor. There it was...my winning lottery tickets and the deed to the Golden Gate all jumbled into a mass of melted metal. The number 4 piston was burned to a crisp and number 2 wasn't far behind. As for the cause, only the factory may know. Ricky is leaning toward insufficient oil supply to the piston but there are no obvious reasons why.
And that's where the holdup on getting my motor fixed or replaced comes into play. Yamaha wants a download from the motor and has yet to commit to what they're actually going to do. On top of that, Ricky tells me that it will be 2-3 weeks to get a new powerhead from Georgia. So now, it looks like I'll have extra time to ponder how Yamaha will restore my confidence in what most would think is a sure bet.
It's scary enough to spend $15,000 on something that doesn't last more than a month, but even worse is the fact that no amount of money can buy piece of mind- or safety for that matter.
Can you help me get my story higher up the Yamaha ladder past the customer service operator?
Thanks for feeling my pain. haderaz@earthlink.net

Re: Yamaha 250 blows after 30 hours

hello
dude welcome to DFI tecnology. sometimes they go poof just cause. we have had some trouble with the bleeding procedure on that engine. as in techs are not doing it. so all you can do is see if yammi is going to consider it a defective product or whether they will say its a dealer problem. I can tell you that if you get nasty with them you will miss striper season next year. they have to fix it sooner or later . Yamaha is normally prompt and very responsive to warrenty issues. some dealers have to many issues so they get looked at very hard.
good luck and keep posting.
