Yamaha 250 Ticking Sound?

My 93 250 has a ticking sound coming from the top of the motor towards the front. I pulled the plugs and turnd the motor by hand and can't hear anything. It sounds almost like a lifter on a 4 stroke. Any ideas?

I'm thinking maybe wrist pin. What does that sound like?

Thanks

Re: Yamaha 250 Ticking Sound?

I got a '97 150 Suzuki that ticks real load at idle with cover off for almost a year now, although it runs fine and does not seem to be getting worse. If you receive any constructive input on this issue please email me at robinso.michael764@gmail.com.Thanks Michael

I found the source of the tick. I was a broken zip tie on the stator underneath the flywheel. I was never so happy to see something broken!

Hopefully mine is that cheap, I have lucked out maybe once or twice with boat issues, most of the time big bucks, time to play lottery!

Re: Yamaha 250 Ticking Sound?

your motor is broke, fix it.
if you check your ign timing you will most likly see its fixed at 7* BTDC instead of 6* ATDC.
this will indicate the ECU isnt recieving the correct signal from a sensor.
also could mean some backyardigan removed the thermostats.
could be anything from a stuck/missing t-stat to a failed sensor or a dissconected knock sensor.
if you get a code 9 though I know what it means and for the right price ill tell ya.
dont bother calling Yamaha cause they will tell you the ECU isnt programmed to display a code 9 but trust me it can.
almost any sensor failure or out of range reading will result in timing being fixed at 7* BTDC and fuel enrichment fixed rich.
missing or stuck t-stats will fix timing to no lower than 5* BTDC fuel will go rich by about 20% and top speed can normally be reached.
idle speed will increase.
the tuneup spec guide, the winy blinky and an understanding of how the ECU reacts to sensor inputs,or lack of, will be critical for timely testing and no parts shotgunning.
