I have a yamaha 30 hp which pumps water fine but steams when running fast. On top of the water pump is a tube approx 6" long through which exits the input shaft to the gearbox. I know water is exiting through this tube as there is no seal and water exits through the front of the leg. Is this correct or should there be a seal in this tube? Please help.

Re: Yamaha 30hp water pump

you didn't specify the year and model or if you use the motor in salt water.

you will have to get a service manual to verify if there is a seal there. it might be called a gromett.

if you are getting a good stream out of the pisser, the thermostat may be stuck.

if the thermostat works your head may be full of salt. this is sometimes caused by storing the motor on the floor head down. this is also caused by not flushing.

Re: Yamaha 30hp water pump

I've got the motor in bits (again) and found there is a flat rubber grommet/seal between the plastic and aluminium sections of the waterpump which is badly worn and will hopefully resolve the problem. The motor is a AM30 but I have no idea of the year. Thanks for your reply.
