Yamaha 4 stroke EFI questions

Howdy,
I have an 05 Yami 150 4stroke. I have read that the warm up lever really messes with the computer on these motors. What exactly happens when you mess with it?

The other question I have is oil related. Seems I get a very small amount of oil in the bottom of the cowling sometimes, maybe a couple of drops or so. I can only see it when I tilt the motor up and it pools up. I have heard that it is normal for these motors to blow a bit of oil or have some drain out because the motor is tilted up to quickly before the oil has a chance to settle back down. Is this true?

I have always had inboard motors with no oil leaks and carburation so this is all a bit new to me.

Thanks.

Re: Yamaha 4 stroke EFI questions

If you start most any EFI motor with the warm-up lever engaged, the computer sees a sensor (specifically Throttle Sensor) with a value it doesn't expect. The computer then defaults to a program that allows the motor to run, but it ignores certain sensor input. That means it won't run in tune. All you usually have to do is turn the key off and start it again with the throttle at idle.

I haven't heard that about oil under the cowling being caused by that. All I can suggest is to clean it up and make sure it's not just oil that spilled during filling or changing that upside-down oil filter. WHY DO ENGINEERS DO THESE SILLY THINGS??? It's dang near impossible to change the oil on most any 4-stroke outboard without creating a mess.

Re: Yamaha 4 stroke EFI questions

I cleaned up all the residue after the last oil change. On my last trip, I noticed another small oil sheen. I had an 04 150 that leaked about 5 drops after every trip. The Yamaha techs couldn't figure that one out so they put a new motor on my boat. Looks like this one is starting to so the same thing.
