Hi all New to Boating and new to this Site, i Joined Because im having problems with my Outboard and wanted some Expertise help,
I have a Yamaha 4 stroke 4 Hp, Engine is a 2001 model, i had my outboard on its side (The right side it was Instructed to be put on) However it always seemed to Slightly Leak oil from the top end from the crank case for a little while after starting this Went away its self (it only happens after recently being serviced so i was told this was from it being slightly overfilled?, anyway the real problem im having now is i went to go out today pulled up at my boat and went to get my engine from the car when i lifted it out i could smell a verry strong smell of Gas, i assumed i may have spilled a little gas on the hood when filling it but nope, when i inspected the engine i found some what i think is gear oil on the lower end kinda all around it. it smelled verry like Gas but was too Brown and thick to be Gas, i went out on my boat anyway and ticked around lighltly for most of the day with no problems then towards the end i pushed the engine Harder and it started Smoking Badly white smoke with a Nerving Burning smell, this smoke would appear anytime the engine was Pushed over crusing speed Any help will be Appreciated Thanks.

Welcome to boating and the forum.
Red flag, you had it serviced,it didn't do this before , then he told you this was from being slightly over filled, never overfill a Yamaha a seal may have blown out, he's honest but not very bright.
I would take it back to the service person, tell him you think a seal blew out from overfill, and could you please check everything, something's not right and I don't want to burn the motor up.
If he doesn't cooperate pick up your motor and take it to ONLY a certified Yamaha outboard mechanic. When he fix's the motor you take the bill back to the first mechanic and get your money, if not small claims, he doesn't want to go there.

Thanks, a friend who is quite experienced sorted the oil thing out a few weeks back and it was running fine and stopped leaking, i forgot to mention that, but he told me that the Gear oil in the lower end is separate from that of the oil that goes into the crankcase and its the Lower end what i think is gear oil thats giving the problem now. i was talking to him today and he told me that it was more than Likely oil being burnt up that got into, i think he said Carb? Maybe im wrong Please forgive my Lack of knowledge on mechanics, it may have been some different Part but the Moral of the story was that it was not serious and just from when it was being Transported it may have Slid slightly of side from time to time when on the road. Btw if its of any Use the Smoke was Blueish White

there is not way for lower unit lube to get into the carb unless you put it in there.
lower unit is sealed to keep the oil in and the water out.

read the owners manual, I would think that you should drain the fuel before laying the motor on its side.
fuel will drain out of the system when laid down like that.
as far as the smoking only at full throttle, I have no idea what would cause that.
black smoke is usually over rich fuel to air ratio.
blue is burning oil
white is water/steam

Hi Thanks for the reply, i think everything may be sorted now i started the engine up and it smoked Alot White Smoke for the first 5-10 seconds tops and cleared away Ran it for awhile at full for a little while and no smoke came back i then Parked up and left it for about an hour too see would the smoke come back started up and no smoke. im still curious as to what caused this to happen Im assuming it was some form of oil being burnt up, When you say i should drain the fuel before laying it on its side would Turning the fuel switch off be Okay or take the fuel out of the tank Compleatly?

I would think shutting off the fuel valve and running motor until it died would burn up most of the fuel in the carb to keep it from running out when laid down.
But that may not keep the fuel in the tank from leaking out if the cap and cap vent was below the liquid fuel level.
use some common sense on what will happen if vent or cap leaks
read the owners manual
